The city of Dehradun is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Uttarakhand state and people throng here from all over both within and out of India. The main reason why tourists like the place is its amazing climatic conditions and green natural surroundings that refresh whoever comes to the place. Although one can find that there is no particular time for visit to this ever green valley but it all depends on ones mood. There are various lovely seasons that have their own characteristics and importance for anyone to come here. This is the reason the place is thronged by huge number of tourists all year round.
Best Season to Visit
The weather condition in the Dehradun valley is more of a tropical type where you might see extremes of climates with hot summers and extremely cold winters. Also there are huge rains during the rainy or monsoon seasons which might make your travel around a bit difficult at that time.
Although one can enjoy the snow falls during the extreme cold months of December and January and the bathe in the river waters during the hot summer months of May to June but if you want the best temperatures then the best time for visit are the months of February to April when climate is neither too hot nor too cold hence very pleasant.
Visiting in the Summers
The summers in the city of Dehradun starts from the month of June and stays till August end after which the monsoon showers start which immediately drops down the temperatures and make the climate cool and pleasant. The temperatures during the summers range from 35 to 40 degrees centigrade approximately.
One can surely enjoy the river water resources in and around the city to calm down from heat during the hot days. There are places with free flowing rivers like Sahastradhara, Lachchiwala and Guchchupani where one can enjoy in the cool waters and have lots of fun with friends and family. You could also plan your trip to the beautiful hill station of Mussoorie, just few kilometres from Dehradun city, which has cool and pleasant weather during the summers because of its high altitude.
Visiting in the Winters
The chilling winds start from the month of November when there is heavy snow fall up in the Himalayan Mountains and the cold waves just start spreading then. During the winters one could see the snow clad mountain ranges all around the Dehradun valley and even the Mussoorie could be seen all laden with pure white snow. There are also quick and short rainfalls during these which further reduce the temperatures quite close to freezing points. The temperature ranges from 2 degrees to 10 degrees centigrade but has not found to reach freezing points yet although it had at sometimes snowed in few higher altitude places of Rajpur road in Dehradun itself.
The winter season starts receding from January end till February mid when it starts becoming warmer. One can enjoy the snow falls of Mussoorie and the ice skiing is also done as an adventure sports during these times when the amount of snow rises high in Dhanaulti and Chakrata. If you love watching show then this could be the right time for visit along with your loved ones.
Visiting in the Monsoons
Although the valley of Dehradun keeps getting short spurts of rains every other month and which also helps in keeping the climate pleasant and under control but the real rainy season starts from the month of July and stays approx till September first or second week.
If you are visiting the place these months then beware of the thunderstorms and very heavy rains that follow during this time. It often becomes difficult to commute to different places as the roads become broken or flooded with waters. So be ready for such happenings if you are planning for monsoons.
Peak Time for Visit
As you could see from above that each season has its own beauty and can be enjoyed but there are few months of the season when one could see huge activity in the number of tourists visiting this beautiful place. These are the months just after the winters starting from February with the bloom of the springs and then through the month of June when there is steady rise in the temperatures for summers.
Hence February through June is the best visiting time you could look out to plan your holidays along with friends or family. During these months you could enjoy each and every fun activity right from the tour to the hill stations of Mussoorie and Dhanaulti to the various water spots like Sahastradhara and Lachchiwala to name a few. There are water parks and dear parks to enjoy the picnics while there are sacred temples to take the blessings of God.
